As you know, a symbol is something that stands for itself ( concrete noun) but also something larger than itself (abstract noun).  Writers often use a concrete object/noun to express an abstract idea, a quality or a belief.  A symbol may appeal to a reader’s emotions and can provide a way to express an idea, communicate a message, or clarify meaning.

There are conventional symbols and private symbols.  A conventional symbol is one that is widely accepted and known.  For example, a dove might represent peace, a rose might represent love, etc.  A private symbol is one that an individual writer creates for his/her work of literature.

Think about the items that surround your life.  Choose one symbol (concrete noun) and write about what it represents

(abstract noun).  Make sure you elaborate fully and write a minimum of 100 words.

  1. The item that surrounds my life is my family. It represents my ancestors and culture. My mom tells us what she did as a kid and the things she did to help her parents around the house. My dad told me how he grew up speaking french as his first language. My grandma’s parents came form Ireland and took a ship to Ellis Island and settled in New York. My grandpa’s parent’s came from New York City. Two traditions in my family are going to Florida for thanksgiving because my grandma lives in Florida. The second tradition is me and my dad going to Lake Tahoe for February break. Whenever my family goes to Florida my grandma makes only the first night pasta with red sauce and meatballs. When my dad and I go to Lake Tahoe we always stay at my friends house.

    • the symbols that are around my life is my dog she is memorable canine and thats what my family what it is today . and every year we go to nyc and that is a concrete noun becuase thats were hang out and that thats were my grandma and my grandpa went to first after they dock from italy and staied there from a few years than movied here in darien and were would never be here if they never came here to darien and meet all these people and teachers and thats were we learned english and where he got his first job .

  2. My symbol is my Great Grandma and she represents to me love, sorrow, guilt, and memories. My Great Grandma represents love because before she passed I’d love to go and visit her and send her cards and letters so she made me smile and she loved me with all her heart , and on her funeral it really showed how much love there was for her and how we will all miss her. She also represents sorrow because her death and funeral were really the first ones that really broke my heart and filled everyone’s heart with sorrow. She represents guilt for me because I blame myself for her death for reasons that I don’t even know of so I feel like her death was my fault when it wasn’t. Finally my Great Grandma represents memories because she was one of those people that I didn’t get to see very often but when I did the memories stuck with me and most of the memories were good ones.

  3. The item that surrounds my life is my soccer ball. It represents who I am. I am a person who loves to play soccer and will do anything to play soccer. Every vacation we go on I always bring my soccer ball. When we go to the beach I practice. I am in my house I kick the ball against the coach. Sometimes if I am lucky my brother will even play with me. We go outside and set up two goals across from each other and we try to score from your sides. My brother always beats me, but if I keep practicing I could one day beat him.

    • My soccer ball represents me as a person. The abstract noun I would give it is intensity. I would say intensity for my soccer ball because it always gets me pumped up and gets me intense.

  4. The item that surrounds me in my life is a clock. It represents time, order, and responsibility. It represents responibility because when I think of responsibility I think of finishing things on time. If you waste and not be responsible for your time, then you wouldn’t have time to finish your homework, do things you love to do and alot more. Also if your not responsible for your time, it would never come back. Time is really inportant to me because I have swimming everyday, I have to do my homework, do my chinese homework, go to drawing class, homework from my mom, practicing my flute, and more. I need to manage my time to do those things. Time is everywhere.

    • I Completely agree. Time is everywhere. I especially like how you said that if you’re not responsible for time, it would never come back. That’s very true. All of the things that you mentioned a lot a time, and I know what you mean-especially chinese homework:-)

  5. The one thing that surronds my life is my guitar. It represents my feelings, my passion, and my escape. It represents feelings because I like to play my guitar and feel all my feelings spilling out of me and into the soul of the notes. It represnts my passion since I’ve been playing for two years now and enjoy playing it a lot. It’s my escape because sometimes the real world’s a handful and it’s nice to relax and escape into the joy and melody of the guitar’s melodious notes. The Guitar is my way to feel free of everything else.

  6. I think the Concrete Noun that would surround my life the most is the TV. One reason why i choose the TV is because it is enjoyable, calm, relaxing, Fun, and makes me full of Happiness. I enjoy watching TV because if you are bored one weekend and have nothing to do all you can do is go jump on your couch and watch one of your favorite TV shows. Another reason why i choose the TV is because it is fun. I think the TV is fun because you have a huge variety of shows to watch from Drama, to Sports, to cartoons, and many more. The shows that i love to watch are the drama ones if i had to pick one though. I also think TV is relaxing. I think TV is relaxing because if you are tired from a long day at school when you come home after finishing homework you can turn the remote on, and watch some TV. I also think TV is calm because whenever i watch it i feel relaxed and settled down, not under any pressure especially when I’m watching a show I loveeeee. And those are just a couple reasons why i think TV is something that surrounds my daily life.

  7. Elise DP period 1
A symbol that represents me is my laptop. My laptop represents me because I can communicate with friends and family. My grandma lives in Hawaii and I only see her once a year. With my laptop I can stay connected with her, we can communicate by e mail. When my dad is away for business trips ( which is often) I can e mail him and do Skype with him. I can also entertain myself with my laptop. I can play games on it and listen to music and also watch movies and much more. I can carry my laptop any where I go. That is why my laptop represents me.

  8. The item that sorrounds my life is my whole entire family. My family really represents my life, how I feel, and the holidays we spend and charish together. My family and I always have great special times together. One of our very close friends who are like family to us, really treat us like family. Even though we aren’t realated to each other one of our very speacial traditions is spending Christmas night together. With my real family members our famous tradition is meeting up in Aruba, or Lake George and having what we like to call a family reunion, that is how they represent my life. When ever I am feeling down, my family is always there for me, expesially me parents and grandparents. They help me with my homework when I get really frusterated, and help me through tough times and days. That is how they represent how I feel. The holiday that my family gets really excited for is St. Patrick’s Day. That is because my dad’s parents and my mom’s parents, parents both immagrated from Ireland to Ellis Island. So, I am 100 % Irish. Even if we are celebrate St. Patricks day and we are celebrating, Christmas or Easter together we still have great times together! That is how they represent the holidays we spend and charish together!!!

  10. My symbol would be a ball I caught at a baseball during a game. I was so happy about it. The story behind it was the third inning and during a playoff game and I was in the outfield Playing left field. With 1 out I was filled with stress but then it happened the ball was flying to my left. I don’t know how I pulled it off But I caught the Ball and made an amazing play. I used my reflexes so I jumped to my left and there it was in my hand. After I caught the ball I was filled with joy as everyone cheered and that was An important play of the Game, I was so happy when we went into the dugout and everyone patted me on the back and it felt good to be a star.

  11. My symbol would be food. I would chose food because it is who i am and i would love to be chef. One reason why i chose food is because i am always looking in magazines and wanting to make a lot of things and always trying new foods. This is because i think cooking is the best thing someone could do because you can make food for poor people or rich people it doesn’t matter to me. Another reason why i chose this is because food is a part of everyones life and to eat food you have to cook it. Cooking is very important to me because i mostly like to observe it and watch how chef’s cook it on T.V. It is so amazing to me how the chef’s make everything perfect and delicious even on t.v. it looks so good! the last reason why i chose food is family and friends. I chose family and friends because i absolutely love to cook and make food for family and friends. This is because they inspire me to make things that really cool and artistic to me. I could just make Annie’s mac and cheese and they would still inspire me to do more and make it better. These are my three reasons why i chose food/cooking!

  12. The item that represents me is my family. They represent me because they teach me how to do everything, love me, and well we always do everything together. They have taught me about my culture, and where I have come from. We have very special traditions that include going to Block Island. This shows us what our dads childhood was like. We also go to Florida every year to visit to my grandma and grandpa. When ever we see them we always have pasta with tomato sauce. The sauce has to be Sclafani tomato sauce because that was my Grandpa’s company and it is also part of my culture. We always host Christmas day at our house and it lets us get together with the rest of our family. My family is always by my side and tries their best to help me when I am struggling. I love my family, they have taught me everything I know today and I do not know what I would do without them!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. I think the concrete noun that would represent my life the most is a soccer ball because I like to play soccer and sometimes I play with my sisters. 16. tap shoes-creativity
Something that surrounds me is a tap shoe. For me my tap shoes are my life. I love tap dancing because it is so creative. You dont have to follow any certain steps. You can make up steps or you can improvise an entire dance it does not matter as long as you are being creative. I have been dancing before I could even walk or talk (mommy and me groups). I have done; ballet, jaz, and tap. I started tap in 2nd grade. I have made lots of great friends in dance and they all agree that dance = creativity!

  17. Something that surrounds my life is my mom. She represents to me, order love and control. She always makes sure everything is done on time for her, and her whole family. She will always be there for me when I need her, and always has an open ear and heart. She makes others problems her problems and does her very best to help. Although sometimes we do get into fights we always have a peaceful resolution. Without her, I would probably have a lot less free time because she encourages me to get my work done as soon as possible. I love very much and to me she makes our family complete!

  18. The thing that surrounds my life is school work, school, and homework. Becuase I feel like I am in a bounduery. And I feel like I cant to much in school and home. Something that surrounds me and represents me is sports. 23. A Concrete noun that surrounds me is probably my brother. That might strange for many people because they don’t get along with their siblings. But personally, I wouldn’t be able to live without my brother. He is probably the only one at times that understands how I feel. Although he just turned 5, he is really a sweet and outstanding brother. He represents our family. This is because he is the sweetest, kindest one and many people who see him think that our family is very kind, like him. I actually agree. He is a very good influence on all of us. We sometimes fight, and I always want to say something hurtful to him when it happens, but I remember how fortunate I am to have such a good brother. :)

Sometimes, I race with my teammate friends for fun. My favorite and best stroke is breastroke. I would be bored without it.

  25. The Concrete noun that is around me that I chose is a Rubik’s Cube. I chose it because to me it represents time, effort, puzzlement and risk. It represents time because you have to take your time if you want to finish it. Effort is because you really have to think and apply effort it you would like to succeed in the puzzle.Puzzlement is because it really puzzles you and you have to take your time on things that puzzle you.My last Abstract noun is risk, you have to take a risk of turning the cube and risking all the hard work you have already done. Those are the abstract nouns I chose to represnt my concrete noun. Although I am not like a Rubik’s Cube it is still the noun I chose.

  26. A paintbrush is the item that represents me. I especially love to paint and draw horses. Since I ride horses every week, I always envision horses in my head, which helps me with my drawings and paintings. All of my creativity goes into my paintings. It helps my imagination run wild. Painting does not have any rules. There is no right or wrong. I draw whatever come to my mind. The colors that I paint with helps the image come alive on flat paper. I always try to make the plain white colored paper into something colorful and unique. I express my feelings through my paintbrush.

  27. an object that surrounds my life is my little green parakeet lily, i chose it because she keeps me on my feet for what ever reason, also, she represents love since she is sooooo sweet. She keeps me on my feet because i have to do a lot of chores that have to do with my birds and her rattling of her ball always reminds me to do that chore i “forgot” and melodic tune always makes me smile. She represents love because she is soft fluffy and sweet whenever i’m down she will pick me back up where i left off. And she is very well mannered she doesn’t bite unlike my other bird and she loves to be cuddled in my palm since she is sooo small. I love her no matter what <3

That is why i chose my driveway to represent the thing was close to me.

  29. My concrete noun is my hockey stick. I chose my hockey stick because i’ve been playing hockey since i was about 4 years old and i always have loved the game. My abstract noun is leadership because on the ice it doesn’t matter if your the best person on the team you may score the most goals but if you don’t support your teammates and lead the team your nothing. If you are a leader on the ice you will go far. That is why I chose those two nouns.

  30. My concrete noun is friends. I chose friends because they are always there for me and other people. If you need something your friends with help you. My abstract nouns is kindness because if you are kind you get kind in return. If you need a friend, just ask someone what there name is and say “Do you want to be friends”. For a start a have my color of my wall painted yankee blues and next I have a big picture/poster of a basketball and a hoop. And to add on, there are just so many things in my life that have to with my life. I do a sport every day by riding my bike to school. I play a sport every season winter basketball spring baseball summer tennis and fall a little running biking and basketball, that is just how dedicated i am to sports. My abstract noun is enjoyment, sports just show how much people can enjoy life and what they do and sometimes for a living. You can go through life and have the best job in the world. And not like it. But most people enjoy what they do if they play sports I don’t think many people are that good at sports and not like the game.

My abstract noun is determined, because I am a whole different person on the court then in my everyday life. On the court I am determined and in the zone, I can only think about the game and everything that I do is to play the game so that my team can win. So my focus and determination are to be able to play to the best of my ability and I play until I can’t play anymore.

I think lacrosse is best represented as a game that never stops because I always feel a rush come over me when I step on a lacrosse field. Pride I think really represents lacrosse and how I feel when I play it and when I watch it.

  36. The item that represents me is a basketball jersey because its my favorite sport my abstract noun would be skill because thats what it takes to be a basketball player.I do it for the thrill and the joy to practice and get better every day and when your on the court it feels like you need to take your game to the next level but when the lights are on its a new world and thats the beauty of the sport. sometimes if you practice hard enough you do things in games you would not normally do thats why I love it.

  37. I think a computer is a very recognizable symbol, it not only symbolizes the future but knowledge, near endless knowledge from the internet. it definitely symbolizes the twenty first century and technolohy because it is just such an advance, from a computer that used to take up an entire room to a laptop that has more horsepower than a 1950s car, to an iphone which can fit in your hand that you can look through a camera and see someone else and vice versa. it is a symbol of knowledge because it shows how much we have learned and how much we already know about almost everything. it can all be accessed by a computer or anything with an internet connection and a screen.

  38. An item that represents me is my bed! It is always calming and peaceful as I slide into the cool sheets. I am always content and happy in bed, like my dreams and even nightmares clear my mind of the previous day’s thoughts and conversations like wiping a chalkboard off at the end of the school day. An abstract noun that describes it is a sanctuary. This is because for me, being able to lie down and drift off to a simpler place is a gift from the gods. Another abstract noun is fantasy. This is because I find it fascinating how our brain never has a rest, and also how the brain ties in things that we have learned, smelled, seen, heard, tasted, etc. throughout the day into our dreams or nightmares. I LOVE MY BED!!!!;)

I have 3 pretty big books shelves in my room filled with a lot of books from poetry, fables, non-fiction, fiction, biographies and history. To me a book symbolizes compassion because they can bring feelings into the body and push them out. I think that compassion can also stand for a group of readers and a book club because you can both share compassion with books. Books can also symbolize Joy and Happiness.

  41. a symobl in my life is a football. that is my symbol because it describes me. it also is mine because it stands for a good hard fought game wich i love. it is a great symbol for anyone who l;ikes the outdoors because often times footballs are dirty like the game. i also chose it because you could take it anywhere its the right size and weight for travel.an abstract noun that describes it is excitment i chose that because if a game is tight it could get very exciting. also it is a good noun for it because there is a huge rush of excitment when you are going to score. i also chose it because if you ever make a good throw or catch you will get excited.

  42. My symbol is socccer and all the people in my family in europe and USA play soccer all the time. True ex: My cousin 14 is in the americas 4th best soccer team at his age.

  43. If a symbol was choosen to repersent my life it will be a school. I am always at school and school also with me. For example every night I have homework and I need to plan out the afternoon so I have enough time to get my homework done well. Also school involves a lot of hardwork. When I play a sport or have a project I like to put a lot of work in to it so it comes out well. Another thing about school is sports. In gym you play sports you can also sign up for after school sports. I play four sports away from school so, in a way there connected.

  44. a symbol in my life is my family. I chose this because they are always there for me. They provide basically everything I have and use in my life. They protect me and show me the right path for a sucessful life. An abstract noun that would describe my family is wonderful. I chose this because they are full of wonder and a cup completly full. These were my concrete and abstract nouns that are a HUGE symbol in my life.
    Sincerly,
    Alex M.

  45. A item that represents me is a Major League Baseball I caught at a Yankees game. This represents me because I play baseball every chance I can get, or I will be watching the Yankees. I got this ball because I was by the outfield fence during the Yankees batting practice when my favorite player Mark Teixera stepped up to the then I knew there were going to be some long homeruns. So everyone was waiting for the perfect pitch for him to smack it but it seemed like it would never come but it did. It was a pitch right down the middle right where every hitter likes it and it was coming straight at me, I didn’t know what to do so I stuck up my glove but the ball dropped short of me. So I had to turn around because it had bounced over my head and to the next row where nobody was sitting, and I grabbed in a flash. It was so awesome because that was the first Major League Baseball I had ever caught and my favorite player hit it.

  46. If I were to choose one thing in my world that means the most to me, I would choose my binder. I wuold choose my binder because to me it symbolizes learning, and passion, and knowledge, because I carry all my stuff in it for my academic life. School is the most important part in my life, because I want to grow up to be very succesful, and without school, thats imposible. Also, my mom’s side of the family is all straight A’s, so my mom is really pushing me to do my best. Also my binder is very organized, and enjoy orginizing. These are the reasons that I chose my binder for this blog post.

  47. Concrete nouns that surround my life are my friends. They represent trust because I can always trust them whether it out playing sports or telling me the right pages for homework I can always trust them. I can trust them because we have formed bonds and I can probably come up with one personality trait for all of them. My friends also represent motivation. They encouragement me when I say “oo” that was a good shot or even, “wow” I like that sentence, I want to write something like that. To me my friends also represent relaxation because I can always say what I want to say and be comfortable around them.

  48. One concrete noun around my house is a baseball. A few abstract nouns that resemble a baseball are passion and teamwork. I picked passion because it is something you get from baseball and I picked teamwork because when you play baseball you get to learn how to play a sport as a team. A few more abstract nouns for a baseball are enjoyment and freedom. I picked enjoyment because if I fell like watching baseball it gives me enjoyment and I picked freedom because you have freedom to pick what team(s) you want to root for, you aren’t forced to root for a certain team. These are some examples of abstract nouns that represent a baseball.
    Sincerly,

  49. a symbol that represents me, is my i pod. This is because i love music and games. every kind of music, any kind of game it dosent matter, i just love it!!! i couldnt stand a day without my ipod. it just sooths me down, relax, and just exspress myself. it soothes me down because after school, after im done with all my work i know i can just sit down and listen to my music and play some games.

An abstract noun that represents my love for drums is passion. I have such passion for music and I love it so much. Drums are so much fun! The passion I have for music is UNBELIEVABLE!

  51. A thing that represents me is my family. My family represents culture, and love, and loyalty. My Grandma always tells me about traditions she used to do as a kid that are still being done in my family today. Like we always go to church for christmas eve. I also picked love because well my family loves me! I know what ever happens they will always be there for me. ALso that there is no way they can hate me. Were family of course! I also chose loyalty because everyone is very loyal in out family. No one in my family would ditch somebody.. Those are some abstract nouns that represent my family. :)

  52. A concrete noun that surronds my life is my dog. My dog’s name is Bodie, and one abstract noun that describes him would be loyal. Bodie is always loyal to me and my family and is like part of it. Another abstract noun I would give him would be love because he is so happy and playfuls and licks me (even though the licks may be slobbery) and that brings me to another abstract noun: playfulness. Bodie can run fast and also jump extremly high. It’s amazing that such a small dog can do that. A dog is truly Man’s Best Freind.

  53. A thing that surrounds my life is my dog because he represents my past and my family memories of him my old dog and my new puppy. He also reminds me of my last town and the one before that. He also reminds me of my boat that has lots of memories and my wakeboard which is also full of memories.
